We designed PM monitors for real-time monitoring of the particulate concentration released during stubble burning in a bid to seek trends of deterioration in air quality and subsequently motivate the farmers to opt for eco-friendly alternatives.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Background\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 18pt;background-color: #ffffff\"><b>Background&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 14pt;background-color: #ffffff;color: #333333\">It is well-known that stubble burning is one of the primary causes of pollution in the Indian northern plains. Burning of the crop residues is a common practice that farmers undertake in the winter season to compensate for the short duration available between rice harvesting and wheat sowing. The farmers of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi have been adopting this technique, being oblivious of the trouble it creates. Combustion of this residue releases particulate matter in large concentrations. These particulates are so tiny that these can travel longer distances. Thus, it exacerbates air pollution in these states as well as those in the vicinity. Stubble burning renders the air quality hazardous and contributes up to 40% to the infamous <a href=\"\/?p=67462\">winter pollution in Delhi<\/a> alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqi.in\/blog\/commission-for-air-pollution\/\">Several authorities<\/a> have been trying to mitigate air pollution due to stubble burning since it is exponentially rising for the last few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Challenge\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;background-color: #ffffff;color: #008000\"><b>Challenge<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 14pt;background-color: #ffffff;color: #333333\">Particulate matter is not only detrimental to the environment but also hazardous to human health. Excess concentration or prolonged exposure to these tiny particles adversely affects the respiratory tract, heart, and even <a href=\"\/?p=67539\">the brain<\/a>! In a bid to control the rising winter pollution, CII adopted over 100 villages and 100,000 acres of farm area in Punjab and Haryana to enable zero stubble burning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 14pt;background-color: #ffffff\">CII wanted to monitor the impact of these technologies on the emission rates. They also wanted to procure real-time trends of the deterioration in air quality due to stubble burning. For this purpose, they required instruments to keep a tab on the particulate emissions. They also wanted a simple and easy-to-use dashboard for the remote collation of data from multiple villages simultaneously. Their pioneering vision also included a continuous study of the pollution-patterns. We successfully delivered the instruments with the plug-and-play operation to monitor the levels of particulate matter. The monitors were embedded with GSM chips to enable the transmission of remote data to a dashboard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;background-color: #ffffff;color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif\">CII installed the monitors in the villages of their choice in the states of Punjab and Haryana, and has been successfully monitoring the concentration of particulate matter. They are also continuously procuring the data to study the air pollution due to stubble burning.
