Air quality monitoring starts with sensors that are designed to detect specific pollutants. These sensors use Light Scattering for particulate matter, NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) for CO2 Electrochemical, MOS, PID etc for gases to analyze and capture.
The sensor is mounted to the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and attached to the connectivity as with cloud and other communication modes. It supports the data transfer to read the data with advanced algorithms. Wireless transmission technology like Cloud, WiFi, LoRa, GSM etc used in the PCBs.
From Sensor to Data: How Air Quality Monitors Work
The sensors in the monitor capture the air samples for data processing converting the raw values into meaningful data. Then, calibration and quality checks are performed for long-term accuracy.
The processed data is transferred with advanced connective technology for visualisation on different platforms like dashboards, apps etc with real-time data to users for informed decisions to improve air quality.
The harmful substances released into the air are air pollutants that negatively impact the environment and human health.
According to WHO research, nine out of ten people breathe poor air quality, with 99% of the global population exposed to levels exceeding recommended limits. Air pollution causes 8 million deaths each year—3.8 million indoors and 4.2 million outdoors.
The dramatic rise in population has increased energy consumption and resource use. It leads to higher pollutant levels and greater health risks, particularly respiratory illnesses. Therefore, air quality monitoring is crucial. Prana Air’s air quality monitors helps in checking pollutants in your environment to make informed decisions for healthier, cleaner air.

Air Sensor :
Operating Principle :
Light enters the mirror’s 90° opening and reflects toward the sensor. The photodiode records a pulse to create an electrical signal for the particulate matter concentration.
Air Sensor :
Operating Principle :
Gas molecule absorb infrared radiation (IR) at a specific wavelength and it vibrates. Sensors measures the decrease in transmitted IR light with the concentration of gas.
Air Sensor :
Operating Principle :
These amperometric fuels have two electrodes. It oxidizes with airborne water molecules and the gas chemical when the gas contact with the working electrodes.
Air Sensor :
Operating Principle :
Semiconductor particles absorb oxygen by capturing free electrons at high temperatures. The depletion layer determines the particle’s size that can cover each particle entire surface.

Indoor sources- cooking, candle burning, tobacco smoking, kerosene heaters, construction activities. Outdoor sources- forest fires, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, power plants, waste treatment plants, oil refineries, etc.
PM 2.5 diameter is less than 2.5 microns and easily enters the lungs and bloodstream. It causes sneezing, inflammation, skin allergies, asthma, coughing, pneumonia, irregular heartbeat, nonfatal heart attacks, etc. A high PM 2.5 level reduces the visibility. It can also lead to environmental changes as well. PM10 causes allergies that can influence sensitive groups.
The top source of indoor presence of CO2 is humans. As humans inhale oxygen and exhale CO2. It also releases from heating devices, oil-burning coal, and gas burning. CO2 is also emitted because of Deforestation or soil degradation.
High CO2 levels highly influence the individual’s performance in a school or office. CO2 exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, restlessness, breathing difficulty, increased heart rate, and other symptoms. CO2 emissions also cause global warming. Long-term exposure can cause extreme health issues. Such as cardiac arrest, and impaired cognitive function.
Indoor- Paint, glue, soaps, fabrics, wood, cleansers, plastic products, solvents, etc. TVOCs vaporate at room temperature and release into the air. Outdoor sources of TVOCs are industrial processes, wildfires, and vehicle emissions.
TVOCs evaporate at room temperature. It causes strong odors that cause headaches, fatigue (tiredness), dizziness, nosebleeding, and eye, nose, and throat irritation. High exposure to TVOCs can cause severe health issues. Such as nausea, asthma, and damage to the kidneys, liver, or nervous system. Some chemicals can also cause cancer in animals.
Indoor: Smoking, cleaning products, furniture, burning fuel, cosmetics, paint, incense lighting, etc. releases HCHO in the indoor air. Outdoor: HCHO releases from natural gases burning, gasoline, etc.
HCHO exposure can cause extreme health issues. Any individual can face irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. It can also lead to skin or lung allergies. With it, it increases the chances of some types of cancer and also causes consciousness loss, pneumonia, and other extreme health issues. HCHO exposure can also affect reproductive health.

It’s a great product that can indicate the level of PM2.5 in a closed or outdoor environment. It’s not 100% accurate and given its size and price I think it would be an unrealistic expectation to have that level of accuracy. It tells you the order of magnitude of PM2.5 pollution in a place and it also indicates the measurement extremely fast. I have tested and triangulated the device output with other readings (from air purifiers) and I don’t think the margin of error is beyond 10%. However, this has been at levels of PM2.5 below 100. I am not sure if the margin of error expands or reduces with the PM2.5 increases to levels beyond 150. If you wish to know, on an indicative basis, of the range of pollution in a place at a point of time, then this would be a highly recommended device.
Very small and compact. Battery life is short, but I’ve learned to keep it on and off when I take it out. Size is amazing. Most importantly, I had ordered 2. I had a problem with one. I contacted the company and they promptly replaced it. I was very impressed with that. And it made me want to give them 5 stars! Thank you.
Ordered the second time as the one I had bought three years back got lost, which I had ordered after 3–4 years of thinking. I need to know the spot AQI as I am a runner. Found it fairly accurate. The readings are in line with AQI data shown by weather apps. Also, PM2.5 goes down rapidly when I hold it above Mi Air purifier. There is only one shortcoming, i.e., display is very dim. One has to go under a shadow to read the data. Nonetheless, it serves the purpose. If you are looking for an entry-level price, go for it. Made in China.
If you are AQI conscious like me, then this product is godsent. Tiny enough to fit in the pocket and the battery packs a punch (at least for now; will update again in a few months to report how it ages). The two values in the photo are from today—one indoors (with half a dozen purifiers running) and the other outdoors. The difference is stark. Also, I realized that I don’t have to change my car air filter because it still cleans up the indoor air well.
It is a wonderful compact air quality monitor for PM 2.5. I am very much satisfied with accurate readings. It is easy to use & very economical. Initially, I was reluctant to buy this product as it had few reviews. I have used it for 7 days or so & found it very useful & a quality product. Thanks, Prana Air & Amazon for this awesome product.
Great product, showing PM 2.5, PM 10, temperature, humidity along with AQI. There was an issue with mobile app but got great response from PRANA AIR team, thank you for the support. Fast charging with usb-c option is an add on, I dont need to carry an extra an extra set of chargers for this device. Truly Portable and value for money!
Measures the air quality index and gives comprehensive data from PM2.5, PM5.0, PM1.0. Based on the reading, you can decide further to buy an air purifier. This product is for people who are knowledgeable about pollution aspects.
Using if for last two weeks. Presenlty excellent performance. Showing PM 2.5 and PM 10, temperature and Humidity along with AQI. Hope it will last.
Very useful if you are aware of the need to know air quality where you sleep, work, or exercise. The battery life is very low, so better to not keep it on for long or keep a charger handy.
Compact size, accurate reading, battery life needs improvement, unable to pair with Android app but not that important function.
