Know How Acid Rain Causes Harmful Effects on Our Environment

Everyone has heard of acid rain. When you were in school there was a separate chapter in our Science book about how acid rain causes harmful effects on our environment. 

Although you may have heard about it, how well do you know what is acid rain and its causes?

Acid Rain Causes

Acid rain causes when there is a chemical reaction due to compounds of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are released into the air. These substances are dangerous and can rise to a level which is very high in the atmosphere. Then they mix and react with the water, oxygen and many other types of existing chemicals that form acidic pollutants.

Effects of Acid Rain

Acid rain causes affect almost everything in our nature. Most likely plants, soil, tree, buildings, statuses are affected by the causes of acid rain.

It has been found that acid rain damages the tree the most. It weakens the trees by washing away the protective layer present on the leaves and ceases their growth. “By providing the only preserved soil in the world collected before the acid rain era, the Russians helped our international team track tree growth for the first time with changes in soil from acid rain,” said Greg Lawrence, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist who headed the effort. “We’ve known that acid rain acidifies surface waters, but this is the first time we’ve been able to compare and track tree growth in forests that include soil changes due to acid rain.” 

Acid rain can also change the composition of soil and water bodies. It makes them uninhabitable for the living flora and fauna. For instance, healthy lakes which has a pH level of 6.5 or higher can get damaged if the level of acidity increases. It can kill all the fishes and other water animals living under the water.
