Sources of air pollution can cause indoor air pollution. Which can further cause health issues. Studies have shown that the air inside your indoor space is 10 times more polluted than the outdoor air. On average people spend about 90% of their times living indoors, which is why we cannot ignore the various sources of indoor air pollution.

Inhalation of polluted air can cause chronic health issues such as lung cancer, failure of heart, etc. Hence, it is important to understand the various sources of air pollution inside the home and office. So, one can fixate the issues that cause indoor air pollutants to multiply.

In this blog, we talk about 3 potential sources of air pollution.

Radon –

It is a highly radioactive gas that can come into your indoor space through the ground beneath it. For instance, well water, a building material that is used to build your home or office. Radon is severally dangerous to human health. It is colorless tasteless, and odorless as well, which makes it even more harmful for the people as they can’t see it. Inhaling radon can cause lung cancer. Fortunately, one can measure the level of radon present indoors with the help of the indoor monitor. If radon levels are higher than 4 PCI/L, take steps to reduce it.

sources of air pollution

Environmental Tobacco Smoke (Secondhand Smoke) –

A lot of people are often exposed to secondhand smoking that is the primary source of air pollution. The chemical from the tobacco smoking (cigar, cigarette or pipe) can stay in the air in a closed indoor space. The health risks of smoking are though well-known but environmental tobacco smoke can harm people who don’t smoke at in the first place. Lung cancer, heart ailment, asthma, irritation in the eyes, throat, nose are a few health issues caused due to second-hand smoking.

Organic Gases (VOCs) –

VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds are kinds of gases emitted from different indoor sources. Paints, cleaning products, glue, printers, photocopy machine, permanent marker, wax, wooden furnishings, etc. are common VOCs. The effects of VOCs include breathing issues, irritation in the eyes, nose, and nausea that can lead to chronic health issues. One way to reduce harmful VOCs concentration in your home or office is to limit the use of such chemical products.
